What is the difference between a roof lantern and a skylight?

Roof lanterns and skylights both allow natural light into a room from the roof. However, roof lanterns are raised structures that sit on top of a roof while skylights are flat and fit into the roof itself. Roof lanterns also tend to have a more decorative design with a frame while skylights are simpler in appearance.
